ABOUT

The BLANK SPACE ENSEMBLE was founded in 2018 consists of the singer Maren Schwier and the percussionist Max Gaertner.

Maren Schwier is a soprano and an expert in contemporary and experimental music and theater. In addition to her work as an opera singer at the Staatstheater Mainz, she can be heard in numerous concerts and performance projects such as the Musiktheatertage Wien, the SWR Schlossfestspiele or the Darmstadt Summer Courses.
Max Gaertner is a percussionist, author and lecturer and has already worked with the Berliner Philharmoniker, Ensemble Modern and Marina Abramovic.

Before the actual founding of the ensemble, Schwier and Gaertner performed together at a wide variety of concerts and performative concepts where they discovered their both connection to experimental and performative music. Together they have already developed several music education concepts and concert experiments, which they brought to the fore at the Alte Oper Frankfurt or the Rheingau Music Festival, among others.

The unusual line-up always means that the duo have developed their own repertoire.
In addition to the interpretation of composed works from the pen of contemporary composers, sounds are created that are rather beyond the mainstream of the classical music scene.

"The concert offered an exciting look beyond the compositional horizon.
The audience cheeringly applauded for the expansion of musical awareness."

- Kirsten Benekam, Berchtesgadener Anzeiger

"The Duo Blank Space brought unusual, exciting and unheard sounds to be heard, and all that in an extraordinary instrumentation."
